samarthosi = have full knowledge
aham = Me
Ethath = such supreme person's auspicious qualities

Bala Kandam Slokam #6

Sruthva chaithath thrilokagne valmiker naradho vacha: |
srooyathamithi samantrya prakrushto vakyamabraveeth ||

Gist:

Sage Narada, who possess all the knowledge about the three worlds, became very happy on hearing Valmiki's questions. He praised Valmiki's such questions, made him sit across and started answering.

Meaning:

Trilokagna = who possess all the knowledge about the three worlds
Naradha: = Sage Narada
valmike: = Valmiki's
Ethath = such questions
cha = Also whatever there was in his mind
sruthva = heard and understood
prahrushda: = became very happy
vacha: srooyathaam = Listen to me
ithi = thus
Aamanthrya = sat him across
vaakyam = to answer him
abraveeth = started answering.

Explanation:

As per the Atharvana Upanishad verse 'Thathvigyanaartham sa gurumevapi kacheth', to attain knowledge student has to go in search of his Guru. But here Sage Narada who is Guru has come down to his Student on his own. We can understand the inner meaning of this incident as this. Since the time is now ripe for the student to gain his knowledge, Guru himself has come to him.

'Nasamvathsaravaseene brabrooyaath' - According to this verse, a student has to serve his Guru for atleast one year, to be eligible to get upadesha from Guru. If this the case, we can ask how Sage Narada did upadesha to Valmiki at once? There is an exception to the above rule. That is, the elder son is exempted from this rule. He need not serve as per the above rule. Valmiki is like elder son to Sage Narada. Sage Brugu is brother to Narada and Valmiki is Brugu's son. Hence, even without his serving, Narada did upadesha to Valmiki, with atmost love and affection.

'Trilokagna' - One who possesses the entire knowledge about Bhuloka, Bhuvarloka and Suvarloka. Or one who possesses the entire knowledge about Baddhaloka, Nithyaloka, Nithyamukthaloka.

'Srutva cha' - On hearing Valmiki's questions. By adding 'cha', we should assume that Sage Narada got the questions which were not even asked by Valmiki, and he answered them too.

'Prahrushta:' - Brahma asked Narada to spread the entire Ramayana in the universe. Narada came to Valmiki's ashrama to give upadasha of Ramayana. Since Valmiki too asked questions about the same subject, Narada became happy.

BalaKandam Sarga 1 Verse 3&4

Bala Kandam 3rd verse:

Charithrena cha ko yuktha: sarvabhutheshu ko hitha: |
vidwan ka: ka: samarthascha kashruka priyadharshana: ||

Gist:

Who is having all the good and holy customs? Who is showing empathy and love to all kinds of animals? Who is aware and master of all the Atma and Anatma tattva? Who can give happiness in this and all the other worlds?

Meaning:

Charithrena - Good practices
yuktha: - whover follows
ka: - who?
sarvabhutheshu - Among all kinds of animals
ka: - who?
hitha: - feels happiness in all situations
ka: - who?
vidwan - aware and master of all the Atma and Anatma tattva
samarthascha - Whoever can finish the activites that no one can do
ka: - who?
Ekapriyadarshana: - Who spreads love and compassion at all times
ka: - who?

Explanation:

Whoever masters both the Atma-tattva and Anathma-tattva is known as Vidwan. ka: hitha: = ka: samarthascha = Whoever finishes the activities that no one can do is known as 'Samarth'. 'Akatanapatu' is the other name for him.

'Kaschaika priyadharsana:' - He is none to second who can shower his love towards others. A person seems lovable once. In another instance, he is not. If we see him we get happiness once and angry the other time. But, This person is not like that. 'Kshane kshane yannavadhaamupyaithi thadheva roopam ramaneeyadhaayaa:' If we see different figure everytime, he is called as 'Ramaneeya'. Who is such person?

Bala Kandam - 4th verse?

Atmavaan ko jithakrodho dyuthimaan konasooyaka: |
Kasya pipyathi devascha jatharoshasya samyuge ||

Gist:

Who controls all the senses? Who keeps his anger in his control? Who is so bright that the entire universe admires him? Who does not envy about the auspicious qualities that others possess? If one gets angry on any evil activities, both devas and asuras will dread to face him. Who is He?

Explanation:

Atma means Body and Senses put together. Who has kept these in his control? As the verse 'Atma jeeve druthau swabhave paramathmani' says, Atmavaan means Courageous person. Who is that person is the question.

'Jithakrodha:' Whoever controls anger, can be called as Jithakrodha. Without getting angry but just punishes for the mistakes done, is also called as Jithakrodha.

'Dhyuthimaan ka:' Whoever has pure light in his mind, senses; On seeing whom the entire universe gets pleased, he is known as 'Dhyuthimaan'.

'ka anasooyaka:' - Jealous is something that we show to a person, if we cannot bear his auspicious qualities. Who is that person who does not have such jealousy is the above question's summary.

'Kasya pibyathi devascha jathadhoshanya samyuge'. Kasya = On seeing whom; Jathadhoshasya = If one gets angry on bad things; devascha = devas and asuras; pibyathi = gets scared?

As per the grammar rule, 'bedhrarthanaam bayahethoonaam', 'kim' becomes 'kasya'. Since he has explained very deeper meanings in these three verses, the author has used 'Udaatta alankara' in these verses.

BalaKandam - Sargam 1 - Verse #2

BalaKandam Slokam #2

Konvasmin sampradham loke gunavaan kashcha veeryavaan |
dharmagyascha kruthagyascha sathyavaakye dhrudavratha: ||

Gist:

Who is considered as Supreme in this universe? Who possess all the auspicious qualities in this universe? Who has got trained in usage of all weapons and can destroy his enemies with those weapons? Who has the knowledge of the Dharma? Who always remembers the help he got from others? Who is the best among scholars? Who follows the dharma even during bad phases?

Meaning:

Asmin lOke = In this universe
Sampradham = in this time
Gunavaan = who has got all the auspicious qualities
ka: = who?
dharmagyascha = who has the knowledge of all the dharma as per the Vedha and puranas
kruthagyascha = who does not remember any of the problems created, but does remember the only one help done, with gratitude.
sathyavakya = Whoever speaks truth in all the difficult situations (who?)
dhrudavratha: = whoever follows the dharma in all the difficult situations (who?)

Explanation:

Valmiki with all due respect, started asking questions to Sage Narada, who came to the former's Ashrama. Next three shlokas details the questions that were asked.

konu asmin - As per this Amarakosha sentence, 'nu' refers to a Question. Asmin means 'in this universe'.

Sampradham - means 'present tense'. Lord Vishnu has got good name in the other worlds - as a person who possesses auspicious qualities. Valmiki does not intend to ask this question. He wanted to ask - who is superior in this Bhuloka (universe)? Moreover, in this universe, in different periods, there were Supreme persons present such as Narasimha, Vaamana, Parasurama etc. Valmiki was aware of that too. Hence, the present period was referred here with the word 'Sampradham'.

Gunavaan = He first enquired about the Society and then asked about the good qualities an Emperor should possess.

'kascha veeryavaan' = He used the word 'ka:' again and again, which says about his intent of asking questions to Sage Narada. We should suffix this 'ka:' after all the auspicious qualities.

If one person gets any qualities, then he undergoes certain change in himself. But here, with the involvement of a person, there is changes in the qualities. To let this know to all, He asks about the person first followed by the qualities he possess.

Even when a person gets many situations where his mind can get polluted, whoever does not get polluted is called as Warrior. Who is such a warrior? Or whoever possess all the knowledge about the weapons and can destroy all his enemies - he is called as Warrior. Who is such a warrior?

Dharmagyascha - Who knows all the dharma as said in the Vedha and puranas? Or who has got special knowledge about everything? We have to suffix 'cha' with all the qualities listed. Who has the entire and correct knowledge about the Adharma?

Kruthagyascha - Even if the help received from others is very less, who remembers that whenever a situation arises? If we add the suffix 'cha' to the next word, the meaning will be like this. Who remembers the problems created by others to them?

Sathyavakya: - Even in very critical or difficult situations, who does not speak lies but speaks only truth? The following verse comes in Ramayana itself in later parts. 'Anrutham nokthapoorvam me na cha vakshye kadhachana' - I have never spoken any lie. Will not speak also in future.

Na smarathyapakaaraanaam shadhamabyaathmavaththayaa |
kadhamchidhupakaarena kruthenyaikena dhushyathi ||

Aathmavaththayaa means the time when one gets a danger. Athma means mind. Hence, Athamavaan means who possess a mind. What kind of mind? Even if one got unlimited problems, he does not remembers those; but he remembers the helps received - even if it is a single time help. Not only that he is happy for that help. This person is called as a Good minded person.

Dhrudavratha: - Who vows that he will perform only good and auspicious activities? Who is supreme in doing such vows? Who follows his father's words, Who is having only one wife? Who is able to do all the holy customs? There is a verse in Ramayana, which reminds us this same message.

Abyaham jeevitham jahyam thvaam vaa seethe salakshmanaam |
Nahi prathigyaam samsruthya brahmanebyo viseshatha: ||

Bala Kandam - Sarga 1 - Verse #1

Srimad Valmiki Ramayanam
Baala Kaandam First Sarga

Summary of this sarga:

The prominent sage Valmiki asked the following question to Sage Narada, who came to his Ashrama. Who is Supreme among all?. Narada started answering to Valmiki. Sri Ramachandra is the Supreme person among all in the entire Universe. He is full of auspicious qualities. Answering this, Narada explained the entire Ramayana in a nutshell to Valmiki. Also explained in this Sarga, the benefits one can get by listening to Ramayana.

Thapaswadhyaya Niratham Thapaswi Vaagvidhaam varam |
Naaradham paripapracha vaalmikir muni pungavam ||

Gist:

Sage Narada is the best among all in doing penance and Veda recitation. He knows and understands the meaning of the Vedas thoroughly. Valmiki was most happy in welcoming such pious Sage to his hut. He gave a grand reception and started asking above questions to Narada.

Meaning:

Valmiki got surprised and most happy on the visit of Narada to his hut. He gave a grand reception, made him sat in a place, and started asking his doubts. Answering to his questions, Narada started giving upadesha of Ramayana. The story of Ramayana which Narada explained to Valmiki and the benefits of hearing / reciting Ramayana is explained in this first sarga.

Thapaswadhyaya Niratham:

1. 'Thapaswadhyaayascha thapa: Swaadhyaayow thapa: Swaadhyaayayo: niratham thapaswadhyaaya niratham' is how the word is derived. Penance and Knowledge - Saga Narada is superior in these both is what we have to understand. According to a Veda script 'Swadhyayo Vedhathapayo:', Swadhyaya means Veda itself. As Penance and Knowledge, both are important properties, these two are explained in the beginning of the Kavya itself.

Thapo vidyacha viprascha nisreyasakaram param |
thapasa kalmasham hanthi vidhyayaa gnanamasnuthe ||

Penance and Knowledge these two very important tools to a Brahmin for attaining Mukthi. By doing penance, he eliminates his own bad qualities. By attaining good knowledge, he becomes a scholar.

2. There is another meaning for the word Penance. It means Knowledge. It came from the sentence 'Thapa Alochane' and also as Veda says 'yasya gnanamayam thapa:' - we can conclude that Penance means Knowledge. Swadhyaaya means Veda. Hence, from these, we can say that Narada is supreme in Knowledge and Veda rendition.

3. The Veda sentence 'Thapo hi Swadhyaya:' explains that Veda rendition is itself a Penance. In another place, 'Swadhyayo veda japayo:', Swadhyaya word means Japa. Hence as per 'Swadhyaayaad maa pramadha' (Taittriya Upanishad) and 'Vedameva Japannithyam', Sage Narada is superior in Veda rendition and in doing Japa.

4. 'Thapasvena Srutha: Swadhyaya: Thapa:Swadhyaaya:' As per this sentence, we can say, Narada was doing the Veda rendition itself as a Penance. By calling him as Munipungava, Valmiki meant that Narada is the prominent person in doing Penance. By meaning Penance here, we should assume it is Swadyaya only. 'Thapascha Swadyayascha Thapaswadyaayau' - We should not assume both are different words. As per the sentence 'Vakvidhaam varam' - One who learns the Veda, recites them but later does not teaches the same to others, his knowledge is of no use.

Yadhatheethama vigyatham nigathenyaiva shapthaithe |
anagnaaviva shushkaitho na thajvalathi garhichith ||

Even if the wood is dry, the bonfire which is putdown, will not burn it. Similarly, one who learns the Veda - just by byhearting & without understanding its inner meaning; If he teaches the same to others - it does not serve the real purpose. Such people will not be possessing any powers also. Moreover, whatever they learnt is considered as waste. Hence, one should teach others whatever the knowledge they possess. He is mentioning that Sage Narada is the best in teaching others, by the words 'Vagvidham param'. 'Anadhinidhana hyesha vaguthsrudva swayambuva' - this sentence uses 'vaag' as Veda; and explains one who teaches Veda is known as Vagvidhar. Narada is the best among this.

5. The word 'Vaag' also means Grammar. It says Narada is knowledgeable in all the six parts of Veda and hence Narada is called as 'Vagvisharadha'.

Munipungava means:
1. One who has good thoughts. Narada is excellent in this.
2. Muni means Scholar. Narada is the best among all the scholars.

Thapa:Swadyaya niratham means Hearing. Vaagvidham means Thinking. Munipungava means Feeling. Hence it implies that Narada is best in all these three - Hearing, Thinking & Feeling.

The word 'Naara' can mean both Knowledge and Ignorance. Naaram = One who gives Knowledge is called as Narada. Naaram = One who corrects the Ignorance is called as Narada.

In the veda sentence 'Tho avakandane', Tho means 'destroying everything'. The Ignorance of people is called as 'Naara'. The person who destroys this ignorance is called as 'Narada'.

The message of Narada destroying / removing the ignorance of people is explained in Narada Purana as follows.

Gaayan Naraayanakathaam sadhaa maayapayaapahaam |
Naaradho naashayannethi nrunaam agyaanajam thama: ||

Narada was always singing the praise of Narayana - who removes the fear and ignorance of people. He also removed the ills raised out of ignorance. Hence we can say that he justified his name Narada very well.

The important point to be noted here is:

According to Upanishad saying 'Tham yadha yadha upasathe thadheva bavathi', Narada always praises Lord Narayana as the one who removes the ignorance and fear of the people. Hence, Narada himself got the above skills of Lord Narayana.

Knowledge related to the people is called Nara. Whoever gives that knowledge is called as Narada. Hence, Narada is considered as Guru of all beings.

3. Vedavyasa said this in Mahabharatha.

Naratheethi nara: proktha: paramathma sanathana: |
cha eva naara: tham thadhatheeth upadhishatheethi naarathaStham ||

Narathi = One who gives salvation. Hence Srihari is called as Nara. One who preaches / spreads SriHari's teachings is called as Narada.

'Narathi sathgathim praapayathi ithi narada:' He gives salvation hence he is called as Narada.

1. Thapasvi = This word explains the qualities of Valmiki. 'Thapa: asya astheethi thapasvi' is sanskrit grammar. One who has done rigirous penance - is the meaning.

2. One who has done all the primary and secondary penances - is the other meaning. As per the saying of veda 'Manasascha indriyaanascha ekagram paramam thapa:', the meaning of penance is controlling the mind and all the organs and senses. 'kruchra chandrayana ekadasi upavasam' is an important penance. One who completed both the above penances is called as Valmiki.

'valmikasya apathyam valmiki' is the sanskrit grammar. He was born from the snakepit and hence he got the name Valmiki. As per Vishnu purana, he was born to Brugu rishi. It says 'Puthrobooth bargavas thasmath valmikir yopidheeyathe'. Even Ramayana says Valmiki is the son of Brugu rishi - 'Bhargavenethi samskruthau bhargavena thapasvina'. But it also says in another place as Valmiki is of Prachesa's son - 'Chakre prachethasa: puthrastham brahmapyanva manyathe'. Another evidence also there for this as 'Vedha: Prachethasaadhaseeth'. When so much evidence is there, why should be say that Valmiki born from Snakepit? Here is how we can give a convincing answer.

Varuna who is also known as Prachethasa, brought Valmiki up from Snakepit, by giving more rainfall. Hence we can say both that he is born from snakepit and also Prachethasa's son. Moreover, since he was born through Brugu rishi, we can say he is Brugu's son.

From these explanations, we can say Valmiki had all the auspicious qualities such as sama, dhama etc. and Hence, Valmiki is well qualified to do Ramayana upadesa to all.

'pariprachcha' - He asked the questions in very polite manner. As it said 'Thath vigyanartham sa gurumeva abigacheth', we can presume Valmiki invited Narada as per the rules, treated him as his Guru, and then asked him questions.
